Yello – Discography

Yello is a Swiss electronica band consisting of Dieter Meier and Boris Blank.
They are probably best known for their singles “The Race” and “Oh Yeah”, which
feature a mix of electronic music and manipulated vocals.
The band was originally formed by Boris Blank (keyboards, sampling, percussion, backing
vocals) and Carlos Perón (tapes) in the late 1970s. Dieter Meier (vocals, lyrics), a
millionaire industrialist and gambler, was brought in when the two founders realised
that they needed a singer. The new band name Yello was chosen as a pun based on a
statement made by Dieter Meier: “a yelled Hello”

Yello (1980) – Solid Pleasure

This debut album is their strangest and weirdest- it runs the gammut of styles from trippy
psychedelia to pseudo-reggae. Their later releases were more popular but this album is
definitely the most creative. Also check out Claro Que Si and other Ralph Records bands
for ultimate strangeness.

Yello (1981) – Claro Que Si

This is Yello at its best, before they mutated into a dance band. When they still made each
track a multi-layered mini-movie. Psychedelic, mind bending, never predictable, it’s a trip.

Yello (1983) – You Gotta Say Yes To Another Excess

Yello were right on the cusp of greatness when YOU GOTTA SAY YES hit the bins. They had already
separated from their indie roots by moving over from Ralph to the high-profile Mercury Records,
and their music was becoming something of an underground cult in clubs and on stereos worldwide.
Looking at the track’s titles, one might think that Yello had lost their idiosyncratic sting while
opting for commercial acceptance.

Yello (1985) – Stella

Yello exploded like the sun with STELLA, their claim to big-time fame. Dieter Meier and Boris Blank’s
modus operandi was creating a sophisticated type of dance music that managed to have wide appeal without
sacrificing its strangeness. Meier’s vocals, often more songspiel than singing, jump from film noir and
back again. From the twinkling starlight, disco grooves of “Vicious Games” and “Domingo,” to the
shuffling synthesizers and air of menace broached on “Desire,” Meier’s vocals suggest more than a
whiff of panther-esque sexuality.

Yello (1987) – One Second

One Second is Yello’s fifth original album, having been preceded by a ‘new mix’ compilation the year
previously. Released in 1987, the album is noteworthy for featuring both Billy MacKenzie and Shirley Bassey,
the latter singing vocals on “The Rhythm Divine”. The song “Call It Love” was used in an episode of Miami Vice.

Yello (1989) – Flag

This album is a good follow-up to “One Second”. Very similar in sound, although this record is more
thematic in the concept of a race. Flawless musicianship, perfect mixes, unbelievable clarity and a
barrage of well-written, well-contrived material adds up to another great album by a great band.
